Prime Minister Djukanovic meets with EU High Representative Javier Solana

Following last April working visit to Brussels, Belgium, and after the Council of the European Union (EU) praised on June 20 Montenegro for progress towards EU membership [1], today, this Monday June 23, 2008 at 03:30pm, H.E. Mr. Milo Đukanović, Prime Minister of Montenegro, was received by Mr. Javier Solana, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), as part of an invitation to visit EU headquarters.

This meeting was the occasion for Prime Minister Đukanović and Mr. Solana to discuss the latest internal developments in the country as well as EU-Montenegro relations and the situation in the Balkans region in general. High Representative Solana was particularly pleased at the significant progress made by Montenegro in recent months and highlighted that this served to intensify good relations with the EU. “Although there is much yet to do for Montenegro, especially on reforms in the field of the rule of law and capacity building, your country is moving in the right direction and we can only be pleased to see such developments,” said Mr. Solana.

The EU High Representative also commented on how Montenegro was a good example for the entire Western Balkans region.

During his working visit to Brussels, the Prime Minister of Montenegro was accompanied by H.E. Mr. Milan Roćen, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Montenegro.

[1] Brussels European Council on June 19-20, 2008: “The European Council takes note of the progress Montenegro has made and encourages the country to further focus on building administrative capacity, pursuing the fight against corruption and organised crime, consolidating the institutions as well as reforms of the judiciary in accordance with the Constitution.”
