H.E. Mr. Miodrag Vlahovic presents his letters of credence to the Governor General of Canada

Today, this Tuesday October 30, 2007 at 10am, took place in the reception room of Rideau Hall, the official residence of the Governor General of Canada in Ottawa, an official ceremony during which H.E. Mr. Miodrag Vlahović, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Montenegro to Canada, presented his letters of credence to the Governor General of Canada, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean.

H.E. Mr. Miodrag Vlahović was born in 1961 in Đakovica, Montenegro.
In 1981, he graduated from the Faculty of Law in Podgorica. He completed his master at the Faculty of Law in Belgrade, Serbia with a speciality in international trade contracts. He furthered his law studies in Paris, France at the International Chamber of Commerce and Arbitration, in Luxembourg at the International University Center, and completed his post-graduate thesis on “Intellectual and Industrial Property Rights and EEC Competition Rules” in Leiden, Netherlands.
Since 1990, he has been the owner of MConsult Ltd., one of the first private consulting firms in Montenegro.
In 1991, he was the founder of the Citizens Committee for Peace, a Montenegrin peace movement. On July 17 this year, he organised the first peace rally in Montenegro, during which he delivered a famous speech, “Heroism today is not to go to war”.
From 1992 to 1994, he was Deputy at the Parliament of the Republic of Montenegro, and from 1992 to 1993, International Secretary of the Liberal Party of Montenegro (LPCG). He resigned from his parliamentary duty in 1994, in protest over unconstitutional changes to the Law of Elections.
In 1998, he was one of the founders of the Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CEDEM), from 1999 to 2000, columnist for the Montenegrin weekly Monitor (also in the period 1991-1993), as well as from 2002 to 2004 Board Member of the Montenegro Office of the Foundation Open Society Institute.
Since 1999, he has been Director of the Center for Regional and Security Studies in Montenegro.
He was the first Minister for Foreign Affairs upon Montenegro’s independence in June 2006. On December 6, 2006, he became Ambassador of Montenegro to the United States of America, and subsequently to Iceland in April 2007.
H.E. Mr. Miodrag Vlahović speaks English and Italian, and is married with three daughters.
